Golf Ball Striking Tips - Improve Your Golf Swing Today (Part II)

When addressing the ball, most PGA tour players bend forward approximately 36 degrees. The average golfer will usually set up with either too much or too little forward bend causing them to lift the upper body at the top of the swing and at impact. This almost always results in inconsistent shotmaking and bloated golf scores. Here are a few golf ball striking tips to keep those scores down.

Proper Shoulder Tilt
Proper shoulder tilt plays a huge role in golf ball striking and the overall golf swing. It's major impact is on weight transfer during the swing. The average golfer will set up with level shoulders and no shoulder tilt. This will cause them to lean towards the target with their shoulders.

Most professional golfers will tilt their shoulders slight to the right when addressing the ball. This will help to position their body behind the ball at the right spot for an effective weight shift during the swing. Pay attention to your shoulder from the top of your swing, to ball impact. You want your spine to move farther to the right on your downswing. Ensuring your shoulders are tilted properly is one of the most important golf ball striking tips you can learn.

Increase Side Bend
When you are in the middle of your swing at your club is at the top, you want to try and increase your side bend. In order to increase your side bend, you want to tilt your upper torso slightly to the right by 10 degrees or more. It helps me to feel like I am moving the top of my spine away from the target than the bottom in the middle of your backswing.

As you start to bring your club down to strike the ball, you want to slowly move the top of your spine farther away from your target. Try and bend your spine about 20 degrees. This will position your right shoulder just under your left shoulder as you swing your club to strike the ball. This will help to ensure that your club is on the right path through your downswing, and helps to maximize clubhead speed. Practice the last two golf ball striking tips, and your golf game will really benefit.

Alchemy, Shamanism, Organic Food, and the Doctrine of Signatures

The 16th century alchemist and philosopher, Paracelsus, introduced in his treatise the Doctrine of Signatures , the concept that the Creator has placed his seal on plants to indicate their medicinal uses.

Underlying Paracelsus treatise was the premise that nature was itself a living organism which must be considered an expression of the One Life, and that man and the universe are the same in their essential nature.

The 16th century alchemist and philosopher, Paracelsus, introduced in his treatise the Doctrine of Signatures , the concept that the Creator has placed his seal on plants to indicate their medicinal uses.

In this book of nature, Paracelsus noticed how the qualities of plants so often reflected their appearance that the seeds of skullcap, for example, resemble small skulls and, it transpires, are effective at curing headache. Similarly, the hollow stalk of garlic resembles the windpipe and it is used for throat and bronchial problems. By the same token, willow grows in damp places and will heal rheumatic conditions.

Because of this, Paracelsus held that the inner nature of plants may be discovered by their outer forms or signatures. He applied this principle to food as well as medicine, remarking that it is not in the quantity of food but in its quality that resides the spirit of Life a belief familiar to those who choose to eat organic food and share the common concern over Genetically Modified substitutes that they lack life force, or spirit. According to Paracelsus, then, the appearance of a plant is the gateway to its spirit or consciousness

Shamans recognise the spiritual powers and qualities of plants in many ways: the colours of the flowers, their perfumes, the shape and form of their leaves, where they are growing and in what ways, the moods they evoke, and the wider geographical, cultural, or mythological landscapes they occupy

The doctrine of signatures treatise is not something known by indigenous shamans, but they understand the principles behind it well enough, that nature has spirit and communicates with us. These principles are not regarded as fanciful at all, but so important that they can save lives.

I discovered how the doctrine of signatures operates in the Amazon, for example, during my experiences with the Jergon Sacha plant.

Jergon Sacha (Dracontium peruviuanum)

My first exposure to this plant came about quite accidentally, when one day walking through the rainforest studying the properties of the plants, the maestro Javier queried why I always walked around with a machete. I jokingly replied its against anacondas!. He paused in thought for a moment and beckoned for me to follow him, a few minutes later we came across this tall stemmed plant. He proceeded to cut it down and then whip me around the body paying attention to my legs and the soles of my feet.. He then said no more problems, you are protected against snakes. I asked him why this plant was used in this way, and he indicated the pattern on the stem which looks identical to the snakes in the forest. Later as I started to investigate this plant even more, I discovered some interesting correspondences; this is a plant which is widely used as an antidote against snake bite venom in the Amazon.

This is accordance with the doctrine of signatures concept. This doctrine is at the heart of homeopathy, folk medicine, and plant shamanism. The doctrine was revealed by the great alchemist and physician Paracelus who lived in the 16th Century. The underlying principle was that the healing properties of the plant are not only in the outer physical form, but also in their inner or spiritual nature. The Doctrine of Signatures holds that this inner nature can be revealed by its outer physical form or signatures. This plant is a clear demonstration of the outer form indicating the inner qualities. Its use is directly related to its physical appearance, the patterns on the tall stem closely resembles the skin patterns of the highly venomous pit viper known as Bushmaster or Jararaca which is indigenous to the Amazon.

The large tuber of the plant is an well known and highly effective antidote for the bite of venomous snakes. The tuber is chopped up, and immersed in cold water and then drunk. Also the chopped tuber is placed in a banana leaf and used as a poultice which is wrapped around the bite area. These procedures are repeated every few hours. Of course the deal here is that it works, and as it not possible to store anti-venom vaccines in the rainforest without refrigeration, this plant has exceptional life-saving importance.

Mocura / Mucura Petivera Alliacea. This plant can be taken orally or used in floral baths to raise energy, or take you out of a saladera (a run of bad luck, inertia, sense of not living to the full). Gives mental strength and you can feel its effects as also with Ajo Sacha, both are varieties of false garlic and have a penetrating aroma.

One of its qualities is that on a personal psychological level it can boost ones strength. For example it is considered good in countering shyness, and can strengthen ones own sense of personal value and authority. One of its properties is to help people overcome irrational fears & fearful memories

Medicinal properties include asthma, bronchitis, reduction of fat and cholesterol. This plant grows widely in the lower Amazon, and it is used widely in purification (floral baths) .

Pion Colorado Jatropha gossypifoilio

Has short lived effect after drinking but helps lucid dreaming later on when you go to bed. Can be used as a planta maestra and it is a plant that maestros can take when being during their initiation. Can also take with tobacco.

The plants properties on the physical level relate to problems such as, burns, swellings, intestinal parasites , Insect bites and stings, vaginal infections, and bronchitis. It is possible to take the resin which is much stronger but toxic if too much ingested. The resin can be applied directly to the skin.

Piri-piri, (Cyperaceae). Native people throughout the Amazon cultivate numerous varieties of medicinal sedges to treat a wide range of health problems, the native peoples for example, use sedge roots to treat headaches, fevers, cramps, dysentery and wounds as well as to ease childbirth. Special sedge varieties are cultivated by Shipiba women to improve their skill weaving and to protect their babies from illness.

Teresa a Shipiba craftswoman who joins us on our Amazon retreats, told me that it is customary when the girls are very young for their mothers to squeeze a few drops of the piri piri seed sap into their eyes in order to give their daughters the ability to have visions of the designs that she will make throughout her life.

The men cultivate special sedges to improve their hunting. Since the plant is used for such a wide range of conditions, it was once dismissed as being mere superstition. Pharmacological research has revealed the presence of ergot alkaloids, which are known to have diverse effects on the body from stimulation of the nervous system to constriction of blood vessels. These alkaloids are responsible for the wide range of medicinal uses. Apparently the ergot alkaloids come not from the plant itself but from a fungus that infects the plant.

Chanca piedra Stone Breaker (Phyllanthus Niruri)

This is a hybrid name chanca meaning to break in Quechua and piedra meaning stone in Spanish. This herb from the Amazon has been used by the indigenous peoples of the Rainforest for generations as an effective remedy to eliminate gall, and kidney stones. The plant has demonstrated its effectiveness against many illnesses including, kidney problems , urinary problems, colic, dysentery, jaundice and numerous other conditions. This herb has become widely used in South America as the herbal remedy for gall and kidney stones, and can typically be bought in capsule or leaf form from many stores. This plant is used only for its pharmaceutical properties, and is not a planta maestra. As a note, this plant is also starting to become known in Western Medical circles, as when I brought some back for my mother to help her with her kidney stones, her doctor was apparently familiar with this herb, but he still didnt want her to use it due to possible contra-indications with the prescribed pharmaceutical medicine.

Reflections.

On reflection plant medicine is totally different than pharmaceutical medication which only affects one whilst it is being taken; these kinds of plant medicines seem to have a permanent effect in some way metaphorical or otherwise altering one's consciousness or "DNA". Paracelus, is still a source of inspiration to all those who work with the healing properties of herbs, and the plants.

One of the great revelations that we can experience in working with the plant spirit or consciousness is that we are not separate from the natural world. In our culture we perceive ourselves to be separate beings with our minds firmly embedded within our physical being (typically our head). The plants can show you that this way of being is an illusion and that we are all connected, all of us and everything else is a discrete element in the great universal field of consciousness or spirit.

Mexico Beaches - Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada

With shores on two oceans, Mexico is a beach lovers paradise. Heres a primer on two of the beach areas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada

Puerto Vallarta

Considered a poor mans Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta lies in the middle of the Bahia de Banderas, a huge bay. The beach is long and nice while the two lies at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountains. The last ten years have seen a lot of development with condos, hotels and tourist support areas going up like mad. This isnt particularly surprising since tourism seems to be the hub of the entire economy in Puerto Vallarta.

For beaches, you really cant go wrong in Puerto Vallarta. The northern beaches tend to be the most popular, which also means more people. Personally, Ive headed to the south to find a little more breathing room. For gay travelers, Puerto Vallarta is considered the most accommodating beach location in an otherwise conservative Mexico.

Ensenada

Located a few hours south of the border with San Diego, Ensenada is a popular weekend trip. Sitting on the bay of Todos Santos, Ensenada is famous for a vibrant nightlife, nice beaches and being the location where much of the movie Titanic was shot.

Historically, Ensenada used to be a secret location known to San Diegans. Then the Mexican government built a smooth highway from Tijuana through Ensenada. So much for the secret!

Today, Ensenada is a good place to go if you want to experience Mexico, but want to avoid the packed, edgy Tijuana scene. In Ensenada, you can ride horses on the beach, do some surfing and visit world famous bars. The most famous, of course, is Hussongs. Hussongs is the place where you can sample tequila and sing with Mariachi bands. The two have nothing to do with each other. Honest.

Everyone has a favorite beach spot in Mexico. Ensenada and Puerto Vallarta arent bad places to sample.

The Winning Secret To Weight Loss

The secret to successful weight loss is a winning combination of efficient exercise, a healthy lifestyle and smart eating. Each one by itself, with total disregard for the other is a sure recipe for disaster and frustration. Going on a starvation diet while spending time on your couch glued to the TV is as fattening as running a few hundred laps round the track and then tucking into a bowl of creamy chocolate mousse.

Moderation and consistency are keys to successful long-term weight loss. Make a doable plan and stick to it. Dont rush out to buy hundreds of pounds worth of fitness equipment in an attempt to look as svelte as the model advertising for it. Youd just end up losing the wrong pounds.

Here then are a few weight loss tips that are simple and easy to keep up with:

Act Now: Thinking yourself thin is great for the psyche but that fat will not budge till you actually act

Set realistic goals: Aim to lose weight slowly and healthily. Weight loss does not happen in a day. It takes months of consistent exercise and proper eating.

Shake a leg: Make sure you get at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Dont start pounding the pavements if the thought horrifies you. Youre more likely to give up an activity that you do not like. Instead could join an aerobics class, go swimming with the kids or join a belly dancing class. Anything that gets your heart-rate up.

Watch what you eat: A moment on the lips; a lifetime on the hips. Every mouthful counts when you are trying to lose weight. Eat smaller meals more frequently. Increase your intake of fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates such as white breads, cookies and cakes have empty calories that you could do without.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of good old fashioned water- it helps the muscles stay hydrated and flushes out those unwanted toxins. 8 glasses of water a day is the minimum recommended amount.

Get your zzzs : Unless you are a sleepwalker you are unlikely to be eating while sleeping. So go ahead and sleep your weight off. It will leave you more refreshed the next day and you will have more energy for another round of beach volleyball.

How To Prevent Slices In Your Swing

If you're a passionate golfer or an avid follower of the sport, you've probably heard players complain about their problem with their golf swing particularly their 'slicing' problem. It is probably the most prevalent swinging issue that all golfers regardless of golfing tenure, will have to go through.

The most common error of amateur golfers is that they prematurely open their shoulder on the downswing path. This causes the slice by the club hitting the ball with an open clubface.

And if the flight of your ball travels to the right inadvertently, this is what is normally called a 'push slice'. More often than not this occurs when the body outpaces the club head.

In order to prevent this, you can try hitting the ball standing on one leg during your practice sessions. The goal of this exercise is to help you maintain your balance and find your center of gravity. While standing on your left foot, for right-handed players, and then practice your swings. This maybe an awkward position at first, and it will take some time in getting used to. But once you get the hang of hit, it should greatly improve you balance and prevent the 'push slice' effect on your swing.

You can practice day in and day out and spend tremendous amounts time on the course or the driving range but if you're not in the right frame of mind, you probably will not get too far in the sport, much less see an improvement in your swing.

More than anything else, golf is a mental game. Although you are playing against other individuals, it is the course that ultimately offers the challenge. Unlike in other sports, your opponents will not block or deter your aim or your progress in anyway. However, the course itself will cause you to plan your strategy. It is the determining factor in how you take your shot and where you aim the ball.

This is the reason why Golfers often say that as a player you are up against the course and not the people on the tour.

Having said this, the right frame of mind is a crucial aspect in curing a slicing problem and improves your overall game.

Why I Hate Golf - But Love It Too

Watching The Open, the oldest and most prestigious tournament in golf, always makes me think about the level of my own play.

It would at best be described as 'poor'. I'd hate to think how it would be described at worst, but let's just say there are only 2 friends who are prepared to play with me, I am that bad!

It can be so frustrating, and yet of course it's highly addictive - when you hit a good shot, you want to hit another one, to repeat the good feeling... Then when you hit a bad shot, you want to hit another one to erase the bad feeling...

You can see the idea - there's always one next shot to do it right- it can be a life-long addiction! Watching the Major Tournaments is a chance to see goal achievement theory at work in quite a pure form.

Let's face it, golf is a simple game to understand, but difficult to master. Difficult, but not impossible! All the top players, the ones that stay there for year after year, they simply took instruction on how to play, learned the technique, and then worked. Worked hard. Worked hard for years.

In fact they never stop working at it. They all have coaches, even Tiger Woods, and you can see them churn inside with frustration when they get it wrong. Notice though, that after they've had a strop at getting it wrong, they buckle down to getting it right!

A successful golf game is based almost entirely on constant hard work to implement techniques which have been taught.

Yes of course you get people who have natural talent, but the huge majority of players on the golf circuit just use this simple goal achievement lesson.

If you apply it to most things in general life, you'll see the same kind of results.

So, do you you hate (but love) golf like I do?
